Acupuncture Can Help With Migraine Relief
Migraine is more common than you might think. It is a disease that affects 38 million men, women and children in the United States. Although not all headaches are the same, they all share at least one thing in common — they cause pain. Many headaches also cause other unwanted symptoms, including nausea and vomiting. Headaches can be caused by tension, rebound from medications, trauma or neurological reasons (migraines).
Almost everyone either knows someone who has suffered from migraine, or has struggled with migraine themselves. Here are some interesting facts about migraines:
- Nearly 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone with migraine.
- Amazingly, over 12% of the population – including children – suffers from migraine. That’s more than diabetes and asthma combined!
- About 18% of American women and 6% of men suffer from migraine.
- It is most common between the ages of 25 and 55.
- It tends to run in families. If one parent suffers from this, there is a 40% chance a child will suffer. If both parents suffer, the chance rises to 90%.
- It is the 8th most disabling illness in the world.
- Every 10 seconds, someone in the United States goes to the emergency room with a headache or migraine.
- While most sufferers experience attacks once or twice a month, 14 million people or about 4% have chronic daily headache, when attacks occur at least 15 days per month.
Acupuncture for Prevention and Relief:
Acupuncture has been used to treat headaches for thousands of years. The greatest advantage of acupuncture over western medicine is that it does virtually no harm. Unlike synthetic drugs, acupuncture has virtually no side effects, and the procedure for treating headaches are much less invasive.
Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body, followed by gentle manual or electrical stimulation of the needles. Blood flow in the tissues increases when small vessels around the area of the needle dilate. The increased circulation is an excellent treatment for pain.
Duke University conducted a review of studies involving nearly 4,000 patients with migraine, tension headache and other forms of chronic headache. They found that that 62 percent of the acupuncture patients reported headache relief compared to 45 percent of people taking medications. This analysis reinforces that acupuncture also is a successful source of relief from chronic headaches.
In my practice, over the last 13 years, I have treated many adults and children with success for migraines and other types of head pain. I am currently treating four patients on a maintenance basis that are continuing to experience relief from this debilitating disease. Following is a testimonial from one of them:
“Anyone experiencing a chronic migraine like mine – There is HOPE & MIRACLE! It is LISA VITALE. I cannot say enough positive things about LISA VITALE at WellnessSolutionsforyou.com. She is incredible! Very knowledgeable and compassionate. She has helped, and continues to help my chronic migraine. I used to take 3 migraine prescriptions for 10 – 15 days in a month (and MRI every 6 months). I feared that in the long run, would take a toll on my health and might be needing a liver or kidney transplant before I reach 40 years old. So I decided to do some research for alternative/natural therapies. I’ve been to both neurologist and other acupuncturists, and no one has helped as Lisa Vitale has. I highly recommended her! She is the BEST Acupuncturist that I have ever seen in Hudson Valley. Quite a GIFT to any community. Lisa Vitale has a very clean and professional environment. As a patient, I could personally testify to the EXTRAORDINARY care I am receiving from Lisa Vitale. –C.S. Newburgh, NY
